Welcome to Therapeutic Yoga with Dr. Stephanie!
This page supports what you are learning in your first few visits in the clinic.
Here you will find audio meditations and videos for a gentle practice. Even if you have not performed these movements in the clinic, all were selected because they are 1) gentle 2) normal and 3) natural. These practices are meant to help you feel what is going on in your body (and mind) and help you reduce the effect of stress in your body.
Your main goal right now is to get in touch with your body. It is NOT about doing the exercises right but really tuning into the sensations of your body and how these sensations fluctuate during the day. Relate the sensations of your body with what is going on in your mind. Notice the effect of movement on the sensations of your body…what feels good…what brings awareness to tension or tightness.
If a movement doesn’t feel good, first, use all that you have learned to modify it for YOU! If that doesn’t work to lessen any discomfort that you may feel, then stop the movement and return to slow relaxed breathing.
Meditations
Find a comfortable position, in a location where you can feel safe and relaxed.
Gentle Practices
Mobility of the Low Back and Hips: Supine Cat/Cow, Single Knee to Chest, Both Knees to Chest, Sidelying Trunk Rotation, Prone Sphinx, Prone Press Up, Child’s Pose, Supine Trunk Rotation.
Completely supported on the floor, this is a great practice to move and breathe!
Progressing to Strength
This will get you started with basic yoga poses in standing.
I have 2 educational videos for “Sit to Stand” or Squat. Grab a chair for assistance and practice squats. Start with 20 repetitions and progress to 30+. In the second video I show you how to mix it up a bit by adding a weight or changing the speed. Do all of this! You can do this exercise every day!
