Instructor: Stephanie Carter Kelley, PT, PhD, OCS and Certified Yoga Teacher
Over the years, Dr. Stephanie has presented at Physical Therapy state and national conferences on the topics of core stability, outcomes research, and utilizing yoga as therapy. Her yoga practice is grounded in current research, functional anatomy and pain science. When she embraced yoga as a personal practice and began healing her own chronic pain, she discovered what was missing from her professional practice: a focus on the whole person. Now, she wants to help other clinicians bridge the gap between medically-based rehabilitation and ongoing wellness for people experiencing chronic pain conditions with biopsychosocial-spiritual care.
Course Format:
Online continuing education designed for health professionals who desire integrating yoga into clinical practice or developing wellness classes for people with low back pain. Participants will engage in 21 hours of lessons and yoga practice videos online and meet virtually with the course instructor for two 90-minute discussion sessions.
OT CE Approval #: 161239
PT CE Approval as Home Study #20S0658
Participants’ favorite part of the online course was:
“I LOVE the merging of medical rehabilitation with yoga and the lectures thoroughly explained the logic behind this.”
“mindfulness lessons and meditation practices”
“visual demonstrations and descriptions of the yoga poses”
“ability to learn at my own pace.”
“Dr. Stephanie does an excellent job with correlating yoga practice with the understanding of mind-body integration and alleviating barriers to pain management. She is very easy to talk with during the live sessions.”
Course Description:
Recent research shows that yoga is an effective therapy for treatment and management of physical conditions such as low back pain. This course integrates research on back pain, chronic pain, and meditation with the practice of yoga to engage patients within and beyond the episode of therapy care.
Participants will experience yoga and meditation in the online course. They will also view short lectures on pain science; nervous system reaction to stress; and functional anatomy of the spine and energy systems. Online videos will focus on those components of yoga not typically used in traditional medical care but have been shown to enhance clinical outcomes: breathing, body awareness, and meditation. Monthly zoom discussions will include strategies of how you can successfully bring yoga into the therapy clinic.
Following the course, participants will have ongoing access to lectures, guided meditations, and yoga videos in order to personalize rehabilitation and wellness programming for their clinical setting.
Approved in Ohio*** for 24 hours of PT and OT Continuing Education.

This course will improve care by…
“…teaching mindfulness and being able to articulate the importance of breathing through physical activity and exercise. (The course) also served as reminder to not “skim over” the psychosocial aspects of pain.”

Course Objectives:
1. Describe the biopsychosocial-spiritual model of health and how yoga blended with physical therapy meets the holistic health needs of a person with low back pain.
2. Incorporate current pain, yoga, and physical therapy research into the treatment of people with low back pain.
3. Review the effects of chronic stress on the development of persistent pain and experience how the aspects of a yoga practice (self-study, breathing, physical poses, and meditation) manages chronic stress to reduce or eliminate back pain.
4. Understand and then practice components of each module of the “Yoga for a Better Back” digital course and determine how it creates both physical and psychologically-informed interventions for low back pain.
a. Awareness: become aware of how thoughts, emotions, postures and movements trigger pain
b. Alignment: explore alignment of thoughts and actions with core values; explore alignment of the body in common yoga and therapeutic exercises as ways to improve overall health
c. Support/Stability/Strength: learn why creating emotional and spirit support may be as important as the development of “core stability” in management of back pain
d. Mobility: understand why “letting go” of beliefs about low back pain is important for both the caregiver and the person with low back pain for the promotion of optimal health.
5. Discuss issues of recruitment, retention, staffing, revenue, and expenses toward the development of a “Yoga for a Better Back” program within your clinical setting.
“This course was a reminder that breathing is important!”
